Office of General Superintendent of Police.
Chicago, Feby 26th 1863
Hon Richd Yates Gov
Springfield, Ill
Dear Gov.
I see that the Conscription Bill is about to pass, & that a provost marshal is to be appointed in each congressional Dist. I should like the appointment for this Dist. Will you be kind enough to write to Prest Lincoln and ask him to give me this position. I think that I can fill the possition with credit to my friends and to the satisfaction of the Govt. in this region. I have arrangements made to have two
men in the field next week, one for this territory east of the Ills River & the other west.
On my arrival home I recd a dispatch from Genl S. A. Hurlbut from Memphis requesting me to send him a first class detective & this took one of the men I had intended for this work. the other could not get ready to leave until next Monday I hope you will be able to send me some funds to pay traveling expenses for this work.
Hoping to hear from you soon I am yours truly
