Hon Richard Yates
Springfield Ills
Dear Sir
The friends of the Union in Danville have learned with great surprise that through family influences Col O Gilbut has obtained the recommendations of O S Davis for the position of Provost Marshal for this Dist, and that his name has been sent to the President. The leading men of he Party have made an effort to forestal the
appointment but lest they should fail I have deemed if a duty I owe my Country to solicit your protest against the appointment The objections against him are
His will not sympathies with Secession
His habits of excessive intemperance
His entire want of business habits
With sentiments of great regard I am yours Respfy
