You will pardon me for addressing you, but having an object in view which prompts me to write you a few lines, I hope you will not pass them by unnoticed. My husband Calvin E Barney is now in the U. S. Service he is a lawyer by profession is a poor man & has a family dependent on his exertions for their suport is now at the Officers Hospital in Memphis Ten but is ordered to join his Reg - which is now at Vicksburg his health is bad & I am afraid it will be worse when at Vicksburg & I appeal to your generosity to appoint him Provost Marshall of this district or of any other that you should see fit. I know there are other applicants from here but none I expect is more capable. You have the power to do as you will. He desires the office but does not know I would dare address you. for refferences or recomendations apply to Horace Hayward or any of the Republicans of this place or at the Officers Hospital Memphis I hope you will not fail to remember Calvin E Barney & may God reward you is the wish of your humble servent

Says her husband Calvin Barney is now sick at Memphis but is ordered to his Regt -wishes the Governor to appoint him Provost Marshall of that Dist - says he is a lawyer and is capable of filling it.
