My Dear Sir:
I desire to call your attention to the subject of ordinance for one or more Illinois Regiments now nearly ready for active service---and ask your favorable notice to a piece of field Artillery manufactured at Quincy Ills by Messrs Woodruff, Greenleaf & Boyd who have received sufficient encouragement from experienced Army Officers (General Hunter et al) to induce them to erect machinery for the manufacture of their guns.
I am induced by the favorable reports made by officers who have witnessed trials of the piece introduced by them---and the apparent inability of the Ordinance Depart-
ment to supply our troops with arms and ordinance, to ask that the Department issue an order for at least a sufficient number of Messrs W.G & Bs guns to arm the regiment of Col Cavanaugh whose requisition was filed in the Ordinance Department six weeks since. At the Cols desire Messrs W.G & B are now making the guns for his regiment & half of them furnished and ready for delivery.
Officers serving in Illinois regiments in Missouri have purchased at private expense some of these pieces and report in highest terms of their efficiency. Messrs Woodruff G & B are enterprising & ingenious mechanics
and machinists---and can supply the guns rapidly and sincerely hope they will receive further orders from the Government when a more thorough knowledge of their improvement becomes known.
Very Truly
Your obdt Servt
His Excellency
Abraham Lincoln
