Rockford Ills. May 6th 1861.
To His Excellency
Gov Yates
Springfield Ills.
Dear Sir -
We have just learned through Mr. Hurlburt of Boon, that Capt Ellis Co. "Winnebago Rifles," has been selected from this place, for our Regiment over Capt Ketcheson's Rockford Rifles, - and against and in violation of the rule adopted, as we learn in making the selections. Capt Ketchesons Company was fully organised, - and full, and the Company tendered to your Excellency before Mr. Ellis commenced getting up a Company.
This Company is composed of hardy vigorous men, farmers & mechanics who have given up their situations and have been all kept in our City under constant drill and military discipline for some times - and if they are passed over, and a company taken organised since they were, and the members of which are still engaged in their regular avocations we think the effect will be bad here & and to be deprecated. We hope this matter will be examined and justice done the Rockford Rifles Yours Truly
