His Excellency

Govr Yates

Dear Sir

I have just heard that Douglas is dead. I do not expect any one else will suggest my name to you for the vacancy. But I was one of the men spoken of for Governor, & there seems a root of understood connection between the two places. I will say too this much that if you will give me the place, I will not only get out of your way, but help you to the succession when you are tired of being

Governor. Browning ought to go on the Supreme Bench. Levett to Congress, &c. Along there I ought to come in.

Yours Respy
