His Excellency, Richard Yates
My Dear Sir -
I am told there
is a vacancy in the office
of Major in the 13th Ills
Regt (Colo Wyman's)
If so, I am extremely
anxious that Capt Quincy
McNeil of Comp'y D. of
that Regt should be
appted to the office -
Capt McNeil is of
the Rock Island Compy &
no man could more
worthily or creditably fill
the office
I have know him
well for more than twenty
years, & can vouch for his
worthinefs, & fitnefs in every
respect - He is a cusin
of Judge Wilson, & Solo. Wilson
of this city - Besides, my
third son, George, is his Orderly
Sergt - Of course then you
must know that he is in
all respects a man -
I pray you Governor,
do him, & me - all his friends,
& the Country the favor
of appointing him -
Ever & truly
Your friend
Jos. Knox
This will be handed you
by one of my partners,
Mr. Reed -
J. K.
Gov. Yates
Dear Sir -
I do not suppose that anything
I might say, would add any force to the
request for Capt McNiel's appointment -
But in the hope that it might, permit
me to say that from a long acquaintance
with him, and a much longer one with
many others who know him a great deal
better than I do, I entertain no doubt, that
he is all respects an eminently proper
man for the place - I am acquainted with
a large part of Col Wyman's regiment; and
know that this opinion is shared in by all
of them -
