Hon. William Butler
Springfield Ills.
Dear Sir,
John M. Clemenston States attorney for this circuit, has left the state. I will divolve upon the Governor to fill the vacancy. I am an applicant for the appointment and if you can consistently do any thing for me it will place me under many obligations to you and if even I have an opportunity to reciprocate the favor, I will be most happy to do so. I am the only lawyer in the Dist who supported Lincoln and the Republican cause. Except H. W. Smith of this place and he informs me that he has addressed a letter to the Governor recommending my appointment, E. V. Pierce of this place O. R. Desiten of Marion & Allison of Vienna are applicants. I think I am entitled to the appointment else I should not ask it. Col Cantrell says he will be after his Bull soon. No news
Your friend-
J. E. Flannigan
I have now

I would be pleased if it meets your views to see this Mr Flannigan appointed,
