Senate Chamber.
Washington. July 22. 1861.
Hon: S. Cameron.
Sec: of War
N. B. Buford a citizen of Rock Island Illinois desires a commission in the Army. He is a graduate of West Point, was eight years a lieutenant of Artillery. He resigned to accept a civil engineers appointment in his native state Kentucky. He has been for many years an enterprising citizen of Illinois, a merchant, a President of a Rail Road, and a Banker.
We recommend him as worthy of a military appointment, and earnestly ask that a commission be given him.
Respectfully,
O. H. Browning
L. Trumbull
(over) see Senator Grimes statement.
I have known Col. Buford twenty years or more and know him to be an accomplished gentleman & worthy the confidence of the government. He is a graduate of the military academy, & in my opinion possesses superior qualifications for a military command
