Gov. Yates -
Dear Sir:
I am out of business, and find it impossible, just now, to get into remunerative employment. I had the positive promise of an appointment at Washington, but they have disappointed me. All the little property I had was sacrificed in sustaining the Alton Courier during the last Presidential Campaign, which leaves me in a very embarrassing condition, as I have a large family to support.
Cannot you give me some appointment, either civil or military, until times grow easier, so that I can go into business again? I freely admit that my military education is rather limited, but I am more than willing to learn. If
you can place me in the army, I should prefer the Quarter-Master's Department; but I am willing and anxious to go anywhere, and do anything so only I can be useful to my country, and earn a support for my family.
Please let me hear from you by return mail - address me at St. Louis, as I shall remain here until I get your answer - and, for God's sake, do the best for me that you can.
Very Respectfully
B. J. F. Hanna
P.S. I can go up to Springfield any day if you would rather see me.
