Washington Aug 7-1861 Gov Yates
Dear Sir Your telegram of the 3rd instant, tendering me the command of the 3rd Regmt Ill Cavalry – by some heedlessness in the telegraph men did not reach me till late last night . I had before that been authorised to raise a regiment of Mounted men & had made my arrangements for horses- arms-accoutrements boots, blankets, &c. I will communicate with you when I get home. It may be found best to combine our strength on one regiment. I desire a well selected & organized regiment with competent officers if such can be produced of which I feel confident. Accept my thanks for the confidence you manifest by tendering me the position. I suppose it is now too late but I will confer with you in a few days.
Yours respectfully L. Lyle Dickey
