Gov. Yates.
My Dear Sir.
I desire to call your attention to the fact that we have yet in our county men that may be of service to our State in her time of need - We have residing in the town of Palmira Lee Co. a man by the name of John T. Lawrence, who was at West Point for two years - He is a man of fine address, and very reserved and modest in his manners, but cool in judgment and would make an excellent commanding officer. We all know him, & can vouch for his cool courage and military ability. if you want true & trusty men for Colonels, Majors &c. you can rely upon Mr. Lawrence
as being the man to do honor to any station you may be disposed to give him - He is of that character or temperament, that will not seek a place at your hands, personally, but I can tell you the citizens of Lee Co. will endorse what I say of him - I will refer you to Col. Noble, who can give you information of Mr. Lawrence. I am induced to write you of Mr. Lawrence, because I know & feel the importance of having men in command of our forces of the right metal and military knowledge. I think i am well aware that you desire all our West Point men to have a place where they can serve their Country now, when she so much needs the services of those who are or have been educated in the line of military tactics &c -
Most truly yours &c
