Hon Gov. Yates
Dr Sir.
The contingency on which you promised me a Field office in our Regiment has not happened, & probably never will. And hence I would respectfully solicit from you a field office in some of the regiments now forming in Illinois. My experience of now some four months I know better fits me for Colonel than some who have been honored with such an appointment. And i must say that i think that those who volunteered at first, have better claims than those who
never volunteered, & only enter the Service by appointment.
I know my experience fits me to command a regiment - & I would suggest, that my position now is very subordinate although it is of my own choosing.
Of course I ought to say nothing of political claims. But this is the only favor I have ever sought, & I hope most certainly that my absence in the field of duty will not make you forget my claims, although others may throng your office in person
yours very resptfly
