Chicago. Dec. 5th 1864.
Governor Yates.
Sir.
You will probably remember that, during your recent visit to Chicago, I had the honor of calling upon you at the Tremont House, upon the suggestion and introduction of Mr. Scammon, and you kindly offered to recommend me for a commission to the War Department at Washington, when I should address you a letter requesting it. I did so about a week since, but have as yet received no answer. If you will be so kind as to send me a recommendation, you will do me a favor that I shall never forget.
With great respect, I am Yours Truly.
