Hon Richard Yates
Dr. Sir
My friend G.I. Taylor Esq Speaks with me in regard to what we, as well as all other young men, truly loyal, feel very deeply in our country and the part which we ought to take with her noble defendant_ I remarked to him that "our Governor" had strangely left me out in the cold, though having repeated opportunities to do me justice. That you could have satisfied yourself in regard to my fitness by a reference to any responsible citizen of this city_
From Mr. Taylor I learn that there are yet opportunities and in brief would say that my brother Lieut C. F. Bayley 3rd Vermont Regt. Inftry, 6th Corps Army of the Potomac is now with me- had an honorable discharge
from a full term of service - rose from the ranks and made acting Captain when the Regt was discharged & has fought bravely in twenty eight battles-
Can you, if he passed the propper examination, give him a commission as Captain or Major?- Without egotism I can Say that my political influence is not below that of which, who are under obligations to you for favors Shall be glad to hear from you in order that I may know how to act in the future_
Yours truly,
W.L S Bayley
