Very Dear Gov. Yates:

In Forests raid into Memphis Aug. 21 my son was taken prisoner. He belonged to Co H. 137 Regt./100 days men. I suppose he is yet at Cahawba Ala. Can you give me any information as to their release? Why are those prisoners not exchanged--is it because their time is expired? or is it because the administration don't want to release guerrillas? My son, Nelson Kibby was sick at his captive & I can have little hope of ever seeing him unless exchange soon. I am well aware you have done all you possibly could for our

soldiers; this is why I venture to address you. I was one year in the service & in the battles of FT Donelson Pittsburg Landing & Corinth.

Yours for God, Old Abe & the Union

Martin Kibby
