With E. Emery letter 11/28/64
Springfield, Dec. 19th 1864
Gov. Yates.
Dear Sir.
A friend of mine, Rev. John L. Guard of Trivoli, Peoria County, Ills. wishes to visit Newton, Virginia, a village 8 miles south of Winchester, Va. to bring away his aged and destitute mother, left destitute by the desolations of war, and he thinks a note from you endorsing him as a loyal citizen would facilitate his undertaking. Mr. Guard is one of my students, whom I brought away from Virginia 12 years ago. he is loyal to the back home, and has suffered much for his outspoken advocacy of Union principles. Please send to me through the Post Office, such a note, and oblidge Yours truly
