Gov Yates,
Dear Sir
Yours of the 9th inst. was duly rec'd. A thousand thanks for your Photo, I Esteem it very highly. I send you mine in return. I am sorry I had not one taken in Citizens dress.
I aught also to thank you for your Kind offer to assist me or my friends, should you have opportunity. I may wish to avail myself of your proffered Kindness I am at present in very poor health, And shall not probably be able to go to Springfield at the Commencement of the session of the Legislature, as I had intended. I have not been well since I left the Service in Augt. 1863. Not able to practice my profession, As I lost my health in the service of the Govt. I have thought I might be Entitled to some light duty in the service of the U.S. or State by which I could support my family. I would like to have the Post Office here Or the appt. of Bank Comr. in the State or something of that kind. The Gov Elect (Oglesby) knows me very well as the Q.M. of 22 Ill Vol Inft. But excuse me for troubling you this much You have my Earnest desire for your success, And shall have all the influence of Your friend and Obt Servt
