Gov Yates

Dr Sir

In my last I promised you to see Mr Jones as yet I have not been able to see him from the fact that he has been and is now absent from Home; I shall be certain to see him before he leaves for Springfield - I have made enquiries about his Position on the Senatorial Contest but have not been able to find out how he now stands all I know is what he told me last summer and that was he was then in favor of Genl Palmer. If the contest is between you and Washburne I am certain he will support you

I still think the best time to operate with him will be after he goes to Springfield as he will be removed from certain influences in this and Coles County that would tell against you if the question is agitated at Home If you think it necessary I will come to Springfield when he does. if not necessary I would prefer not to come as I am too poor to spend money unnecessarily If you think my presence would be of any advantage you must write me immediately as I will have some arrangements to make before I can come. Jones is to be here on Friday
