Jefferson City, Dec 29.
Dear Col:
If you knew what work I had to do from the moment I reached St Louis until this time, you would not blame me for not sooner writing you; and even now I write in the greatest haste.
I presume you saw the "suggestin I made in the Democrat of the 28th. It was handed in late to the foreman by a friend whom I sent it down by, and not given a very prominent position; but you known they have been having terrible times among the printers lately. Did you get my letter from the Democrat office in regard to the preventing of outrage by the [printers?] of St Louis on Chicago printers who came down to work in their places?
Enclosed you will find a copy of a letter written by Col. Beveridge, of the 17th Illinois Cavalry, to Gov. Oglesby. The Colonel is about to be publicly thanked by the Legislature of Missouri for the part he has taken in the campaign against Price. His recommendation ought to have weight with Oglesby. But I think you will be appointed.
Please write me, (care of Gov. Fletcher,) how matters progress with you. We have both been engaged of late on the relative documents of public importance.
Very truly Yours
If you can pardon my haste
C W Waite
I must say that you are supposed to be as busy as I, only you are experienced, I inexperienced. W
Have you rec'd copy of "True Repub. & Sentorial" of Sycamore, and did they publish that article all right?
