Monmouth 6th Jany 1865
To His Excellency
Gov: Yates
Dear sir
Permit me to tender to you my congratulations warm and sincere.
I have ever been active, though unpretending, in my efforts to promote the cause that has found in you so distinguished and successful a champion - and I hail, with unmingled joy, the renewed evidence that the people of Illinois have just given of their appreciation of your eminent abilities, patriotic devotion and public services
Again, sir, accept the reiterated congratulations of an old acquaintance who desires to see you occupying a place, if possible, still higher in affections not only of the people of Illinois but of the United States and your name the rallying cry of
the defenders of liberty in every land
Your Obedt servt
James Henderson
