Geneva, Sept 3, 1861.
Hon Richard Yates.
Gov. Illinois.
Dear Sir: In times like these it seems to me the duty of every man (especially Republicans) in Illinois to devote all they are and have to aid the State in its noble efforts to support the general government. Had not misfortune and accident in my younger days deprived me of the physical ability I should now be in the ranks of the "Illinois Volunteers." The spirit is strong - the body is weak - but it has occurred to me that there might perhaps be some place somewhere that in your Judgment I might be made useful to the state, if so I shall esteem it a great favor to be allowed an opportunity of evincing my devotion to the principles for which we have contended.
Yours truly,
W. B. Plato
