Belleville. Sept. 3. 1861.
Dear Governor
My friend Mr. Jn. Hay, leaving the office of State Attorney and a very good practice, has concluded to join the army. He is a very good and earnest Republican and has done the hardest kind of service ever since 1854. I think we have now about enough Democrats in high position in the army (for which I was, as yo well know) and we may as well now take care of our friends.
His highest aim is major-ship, and if there are still field officers places at your command, I would strongly recommend him.
Yours very truly
G Koerner
