Pay Dept Louisville Ky Aug 25th 64
Dear Governor
I have been making an effort the past few weeks to get up to Illinois beleiving I could be of Some Service to you in the approaching canvass. The general orders from the War Dept are so Stringent that it is almost imposible to get away.
Major Allen the Senior Paymaster of this district to whom I reported suggested to me this morning that if I was desirous of going home he thought my MC could by making application to the Sec of War - have me nominally placed on duty in Ill until after the election with a private understanding as to what the duty shall be(I don't think my MC would do aneything of the kind) If that was not practicable to give me a leave of absence for thirty days. I received a letter this morning from Mr Gale our late representative from which I learn there are numerous aspirants for the nomination in our county, one or two of which would be objectionable. If you think it advisable --- to make a suggestion to the Sec of War for an order that would Send me to Illinois either on duty or leave I think I could put in the time proffitably, I am not advised as to the time our County convention meets but presume in a short time, Several paymasters are ordered to Indiana on Special duty.
Our prospects in a Military and Political point of View does not look bright but I hope & try to believe that it is the dark hour preceeding day.
With high regard
Your Obt Servant

Thinks that if he could be sent into Illinois on Special duty he could be of valuable Service during the Campaign. Suggests that if the Governor thinks it advisable - a request by him to the Sec of Ware would obtain his object.
