To His Excellency
Gov Richard Yates.
Sir:
I have the honor to Acknowledge the receipt of your letter of date August 16th. Making inquiry of the whereabouts Sergeant John Devine. Compy "B" 7th Regiment Ills. vet, vols, Infy.
In reply I would state, that on the 7th of May 1864. (I being then Captain Commanding said Company). Sergeant John Devine was taken prisoner by the enemy, in action near Florence Alabama; Since which time nothing has been heard of him.
