Head Quarters 3d Brig - 3d Divis. 16th A. C. Right Wing.-

Memphis Tenn. Sept 3d 1864.

His Excellency

Richard Yates

Sir

I am aware that your time is more than taken up in official duties, and I therefore the more reluctantly addrefs you on this acc't. I am at present Comd'g 3d Brig-, but am doing so during the absence of Col Wolfe of the 52n who ranks me some three months. It would give me great pleasure to receive the appointment of Brigadier General, and thus place me in a position to show to the people of Illinois, what experience has taught me in the Field. I am greatly indebted to you for past favors, but I am still dependent upon you, and other friends to urge upon Mr Lincoln my promotion I learn that your recommendation, and others

were placed in the Presidents hands last April, or May. by Hon. Lyman - Trumbull. It is possible the papers were laid aside, and forgotton, If so, a letter from you to the President might be effectual in procuring the Commifsion sought for. Right-Wing 16" Army Corps. Commanded by Maj. Genl Smith returned three days ago from Oxford Mifs. The expedition was attended with no disaster to our Army, neither seriously injuring the Enemy who were driven back from time to time with some lofs of life & a few Prisonors captured Genl. Mower left last evening on Transports with his Divis. (1st) for White River, where the enemy have decided to break off communication with Genl. Steele's Army. Genl. Mower expects to return in course of ten or fifteen days when the 1st & 3d Divis. will, (as is expected) join Maj. Genl. Sherman at Atlanta. Genl. Mower wears the Second Star, He has earned it. Mrs. Pease writes me that the people of Southern Illinois are making an effort to contribute largely to the Sanitary Fair to be held in connection with the State

Fair at Decatur. I trust this gathering will do much to counteract any influence used against us, at Chicago Convention held last week. It requires an unceasing effort on the part of every loyal man & woman to meet the emergency in this coming campaign.

Hoping Mr Lincoln may be re-elected, and thus show the Southern Confedracy that we have a united North.

I remain

Yours Truly

P. Pease

Col 59" Infty Ills. Vols

Pease, Col. P. 59th Ills Regt.

Memphis Tenn Sept 3d 1864

Wishes to be appointed Brig-Genl. & thus show the people of Illinois what experience has taught him in the Field. His recommendation from the Govr to the Prest last Apr. he thinks must have been misplaced. & he thinks another letter from Gov. would procure the desired appointment.

Ansd Sept 19th 1864, Snt letter to President & informed.
