Dear Sir

As my personal relations with you and your subordinates in the state Department have thus far been of the most friendly character I regret that our official differences, as representatives of the Federal & state Governments respectively, should have given rise to a newspaper discussion I knew nothing of it until I saw last evening a newspaper slip sent to me from Springfield Whatever I have done has been from a sense of duty to the General Government and I have no doubt that you have been actuated by equally honorable motives.
