Governor Yates
Dear Sir: I write to say that I thank you for the complimentary commission confering upon me the rank of a Colonel
I assure you that there was nothing needed to complete the measure of esteem in which you were held by me; nor was there any thing wanting on your part. to assine me of the continuance of the kindly regard which you have hitherto manifested for me. You will believe me that in the attachment I had formed for your person, and in the great desire I had for the advancement of your fortunes and fame, I was actuated by no other motive than the pleasure of witnessing the reward of your generous devotion to the public welfare, and of the high patriotism and statesmanship you have exhibited in the performance of the responsible and difficult duties you have been called upon to discharge in exalted
public stations. Being persuaded that the general applause and confidence of your fellow citizens can never go beyond what you have merited at their hands; nor beyond the debt of gratitude they owe you, I shall regard your advancement to other and greater dignities with that unfeigned pleasure which your past success has given me
I am with the highest possible regard
ever and very truly yours
