His Ex. Abraham Lincoln President U.S.
Dr Sir
Isaac L Morrison Esq of Jacksonville Illinois, whom you know is an applicant for the Office of United States District Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois
To what extent, if any, the principle of rotation in office will be adopted by you, I have heard no intimation, no do I presume to advise.
But should the principle referred to be deemed properly applicable to the office referred to, it seems to me that no person can have a better claim to the succession than Mr Morrison. He
is justly regarded as a most excellent lawyer, and as a gentleman, possessing those qualities which render him fit for a position so responsible. Mr M. has acted cordially with the Republican party since 1856 and during the last canvass has been very active.
Mr M. is a Kentuckian of Whig antecedents--and as one among the few of that class who have been faithful to the right and does certainly on this account deserve some consideration. Trusting you may find it agreable to your sense of right & your inclinations to regard with some favour
the application of Mr Morrison I am very truly your obt
