Versailles Brown County Ill Feby 24th 1865 Hon Richard Yates Washington D. C. Sir Some days since I wrote you in regard to procuring me (from the highest authorities) a permit to trade for cotton in the rebel states, and (if possible) one that is transferable to the second party. I still [ergo?] any claim for I have done as much for the union cause as any person in he state, according to my ability & means. I want the Permit in order as you are aware, to make money, & I can do it with (or off of) some of those cotton brokers. By you spending one hour with the authorities, you can get a permit, if it can be procured. If one cant be got that is transferable, get the best one you can, & in the meantime look out for a vacancy in the Land Office. Please answer Very Respfly, J. F. Chenoweth
