Jacksonville Ill July 26, 1865
Hon Ricd Yates
Washington D.C.
D. Sir: According to Our understand
ing, before You left for Washington
I enclose to You several letters in
regard to the U.S. attorneyship for the
south Dist. of Ill. One is a copy of a
letter written by Judge Thomas and
sent to the President, and one a
letter from Hon J.K. Dubois, to
Judge Thomas, You can decide
whether it is advisable to offer it
or not, I never mentioned the Matter
to Mr Dubois Myself. I sapposed
his reason for not fully committing
himself, was that he wished to
be free, until he should Know
the result of his friends applica
tion, for a Cabin.. Appointment
for him, I enclose, also, one
in this Number from Mr A.M.
Gaglay of Louisville Ky. to Mr.
Speed Atty. Genl. Mr. Gaglay
is personally well acquainted
with Mr Speed and an old
friend of mine.
I have not thought it necessary
to extend the list, beleiving
the success of my applica
tion Mainly depends upon
Yourself, [Even?] [I?] only send
these, to give You assurance
that My appointment would
give satisfaction to Your
friends and those of the clan
at least in this part of the Dist.
In sending You these pap
ers Gov. I wish, to be unders
tood as not asking You to
place Yourself in any hostile
attitude to anyone, or to
embarrass Yourself, I
would prefer You would return
them, without presenting them,
to Me rather than do so
Of course I know nothing of
what is to be the policy of the
Admin in regard to appointments
nor do I advise.
It is thought by many friends
of the Admin that the 8th Cong.
Dist. headed by Judge D assumes
more than is admissable
or becoming in these matters
I do not mean to say that Our
worth President recognizes any
thing of the Kind.
I trust I shall not be
Considered a "hanger on"
would prefer to withdraw My
application However, I commit
it to Your Care Mr W. May
be was indispensable
if so he should not be a [illegible]

I am [illegible]
very truly Your
Ser. [illegible]
