Dear Sir
I received in Chicago
your very flattering letter. I thank
you for it. I have tried to get out
of the Service for the purpose of repairing
my fortune. I have tried to be advanced
in rank influences are against me.
I am now on my way to New Orleans to [report?]
There is some confirmation
to be made or rejected in the U.S. Senate connected
with the Army - in due time I shall
write to you (confidentially) reasons
why some who now hold prominent
places should be rejected.
I only wish it had
been my foot instead of Judge Kellogg's
that helped your illustrious competition
out of Springfield.
Yours Hatch
