Hon Richard Yates
Dear Sir
Enclosed please find petition of William S. McCormick He had two sons enlist in the army. one of them lost his health got a furlough sent home with camp fever. The whole family took it, one son died the rest were sick to death almost, when the furlough expired the boy was sick, the father got a Surgeons certificate for an extension of furlough, but sent it to the wrong officer and it was lost the boy was published as a deserter got scared fled to Canada where he has been sick ever since. The family have suffered terribly the boys health is ruined, I desire that he may be permitted to return that any penalty he has incurred may be remitted If this is possible to be done and you will get it done. You will confer a great favor upon me, and do an act of kindness to a man who has been sorely tried.
Yours Truly
B. C. Cook
