I have the honor to represent that I have been recommended by Maj. Genl Herron to be Brig. Genl of Vols. and his recommendation has been approved by Major Genl Hurblut and Maj Genl Canby all my commanding officers. You will remember I bear three commissions from you as Captain Major and Lt. Col. in the 37 Ill. Vols. and left the service of my noble state because I thought I could do her more service by saving her from [illegible] drafts for men which I saw [illegible].
I will be very grateful to you for a letter to the President recommending my promotion and assignment to Louisiana and in any way I can show my gratitude to you or your friends will most cheerfully be done.
