Respected Sir
My attention has been Called to a proclamation issued by the Sheriff of this Co and published in the Columns of that delectable sheet the Salem Advocate, "denouncing you for Not Calling an election for State Senator in this the 4th Sen district to fill vacancy caused by the death of Rodgers Now Sir, this is a beautiful sample of the Law & order Democracy, and as a Union Man I would like to hear from you on the subject. I Want to know whether you are still Governor or whether Sam Carrigan our sheriff has succeeded
to that office, because I Want to Know so that I Can acquaint the Members of our "N L" in this town over which I have the honor to preside whether it is their duty to go to the Polls on the day designated by Carrigan & old (Father?) Merritt (the 30th of this Nov) and there & then Cast our Vote for Some Union Man or whether it is our duty as Law abiding citizens to stay away from the Polls on that day and treat the whole proceedings as a (illegible), as we still believe that you are the Governor of Illinois and that you & you alone have the power to issue a proclamation telling us as
Voters when we shall vote to fill this vacancy. We would Very Much like to See Mr Sam Carrigan the New Governor have his Case attended to by you is there Not Some way that he Can be punished for his brazen faced impudence?
Respectfully Yours
