La Salle July 22nd 1863
To his Exellency Gov Yates
Or Adj Gen Fuller
Dear Sir's
At the instance of the Union league of this place I write you for the purpose of asking you upon what terms we could have armes, in the event of our forming one or more independant cos for home protection. we are in the midst of an Irish Copperhead influence, that is menaceing us, and the strongest grounds of aprehension exist. If any attempt to draft is made, trouble is inevitable, we think. You will please forward the direct information at once and oblige the union league

PS. I address both of you having reason to believe the Gov absent.
Mr John Forbes an old Scotchman formerly of Putnam Co. request me to say to the Gov with above he is well aquainted
to send him a Musket to protect himself with, as he feels that he is much exposed, and will be the especial object of revenge. he has lost 3 sons in the service of his Contry, and has one left who is a criple for [him?] also cripled in the service
