Chicago Dec 31/63 Dear Governor
I duely received your esteemed [favor?] enclosing letter to Gen Hurlbut for which please accept my thanks.
I have not seen Taylor since you left Yesterdy Henry saw him he told Henry he would fight the thing to the bitter end - To day Henry Came in & told me Taylor had melted down - he wants to meet Henry & my self tomorrow morning & see if the Matter cant be arranged so I think the matter looks more encouraging
I shall go Henrys offices in the morning & expect to meet both Henry Taylor & will make it convenient to show your letter to Taylor
Should Taylor propose that you give him 2 or 3 thousand dollars & settle the whole matter I think as your Friend I should advise you to accept it - I think this us just what he will propose to us tomorrow he intimated to Ferry that he would take 5000$ and settle - I should not advise under any circumstances to give him that much. The fact is Taylor finds he is cornered - any respected lawyers will tell
him at once the law is on your side - on the whole I think the Matter looks much more favrable than when you left -
After I see Taylor tomorrow I will write you.
Wishing you a happy New Year I remain very Truly Yor Friend
