Dr Sir
The finances of the Public Schools of this city have become embarrassed in consequence of the increased expenditures made necessary by the general enhancement of prices. In order to maintain these schools in their present state of efficiency some further pecuniary aid seems indispensable which it is thought can only be obtained by means of state legislation. I am therefore instructed by the Finance Committee of the Board of Education to respectfully
request that should a special session of the Legislature be convened & your excellency will embrace in the call as one of the subjects to be considered "The relief of the Public Schools of the City of Chicago."
Very respectfully
