Dear Gov.
Your favor of 4th inst is recd. I did not participate in the conversation between Dickey, Beckwith Tayler, nor was I present. I know they had a protracted negotiation and the Judge asked me to concur in his opinion of what ought to be done, and of course I did so. The $2800 I think cut no figure in the the settlement. The settlement amount to -- acceding to their original demand. Dickey would never have brought suit. He acted the part of your friend in the matter - so the Judge & myself think - Taylor is as hostile as ever and will never do you justice I saw him today in conversation with one H N Bryant who has
the well deserved reputation of being a d__d scoundrel.
Judge R & I discussed the matter of settlement for some time before coming to the conclusion which we did. And he promised me that he would write you fully upon the subject and I supposed that he had and had given you the details
I have additional reasons now for believing that Fany is at the bottom of this matter and will give them to you - if you are not yet satisfied.
The friend of yours who says that Wentworth will control matters here, I think is more a friend of Wentworth than he is of you. I differ with
him - we beat him last fall, and have just organized our Rep; cent with anti W. - officers And we are determined that he shall be elected to no more offices unless it is by votes of the disloyal party to which he belongs
I am truly C. B. Farwell
