Gov. Yates
Dear Gov.
You will doubtless recollect when you saw me in Washington. I promised to send you a gift of my fine cherry brandy. I write to say I have not forgoten it, but am very sorry to say, that my good friends in I- had drank it all up when I returned home. I am very sorry it is so, for it would have afforded me much pleasure to have been able to have filled the contract. My stay at Washington was protracted
far beyond what I expected when I saw you. I shall return there soon. I am making some money, and prospect good to make more. I am pleased to say Gov. that so far as my opportunities to learn, while in Wash, that you undoubtedly have at this time the "inside track" for Senator. There is no one of my acquaintances in Illinois, who I should be more pleased to see occupy the honorable position than Yourself. I should be pleased to hear from you if you can write me to (illegible) I feel confident that Dubois is the strongest man for Gov of them all.
Yours Truly J. A. Powell

He promised to send the Governor some cherry Brandy cannot comply. Thinks the Governor has the inside track for Senator and Uncle Jessie for Governor.
