Carmi Ills, Feb 20th 64
Hon. Richard Yates,
Dear Sir.
having served in the Federal Army one year as, 1st Lieut. of Co. "H." 48th Regt Ills Vol. & resigning on account of bad health, & recovering my health the following year, I am desirous of entering the field again. I respectfully ask, if it would be in your power to grant me privilege of raising a company of negroes, somewhere in the South say at Vicksburg Miss, or any where in the South, If you can I confidently ask of you that you grant to Sutton F Sellers, as
Captain, & Elias Robinson as 1st Lieut, the privilege, of raising a company & give us Commissions accordingly.
I had as soon fight them (the rebels) with negroes, as white men, as negroes are the best materials, for the fighting southern rebels,
Mr Robinson served in the same Regt & Co, with me & was discharged on account of disability, he was in the memorable battles of Fort Donaldson, & Henry took sick at Savanna Tenn. I was in each those battles & also in the Memorable Shilo Battle the 6th of Apr, was slightly wounded in the
knee, I being sick went of the field,
This short & desultory letter I address to you sir, believing you will do for us as you think best for us, & the country, I hope you will address us a note giving us the desired information, - soon
