Description
The steamer Monongahela and flagship Hartford are in harbor at Baton Rouge, Louisiana just before they start off for Port Hudson, Louisiana. The ships participated in the Siege of Port Hudson, which took place between May 21 and July 9, 1863 and corresponded with the Siege of Vicksburg. After the Confederates lost at Vicksburg, they surrendered at Port Hudson despite their successful defense, which allowed the Union to access the Mississippi River.
