Description
Brevet Brigadier General Christopher C. Augur is wearing a Union military jacket. Augur, an 1843 graduate of West Point, commanded the left wing of the attack on Port Hudson, Louisiana. The Siege of Port Hudson took place between May 21 and July 9, 1863, corresponding with the Siege of Vicksburg. After the Confederates lost at Vicksburg, they surrendered at Port Hudson despite their successful defense. That allowed the Union to access the Mississippi River.
