Description
The view of the mined and sapped "Citadel," Confederate fortifications at Port Hudson, from the river. The terms "mining" and "sapping" refer to military siege tactics, in which soldiers dig trenches and tunnels to reach fortifications and then use explosives to destroy the structure. The Siege of Port Hudson took place between May 21 and July 9, 1863 and corresponds with the Siege of Vicksburg. After the Confederates lost at Vicksburg, they surrendered at Port Hudson despite their successful defense, which allowed the Union to access the Mississippi River.
