View of the battlefield of Port Hudson littered with fallen trees. The Siege of Port Hudson took place between May 21 and July 9, 1863 and corresponded with the Siege of Vicksburg. After the Confederates lost at Vicksburg, they surrendered at Port Hudson despite their successful defense, which allowed the Union to access the Mississippi River.
