Gov. Richd Yates Springfield Ills:
Dr Governor.
I recd today from F.G. Petrie Esq. Clerk of the Circuit Court of Ogle Co. A letter stating that he had forwarded to you a list of the "Influential Men" from all the Post Office Districts of the Co. Have you received such list? He states also that, as requested in your behalf no Legislator will go from Ogle who is not "pledged in Advance to go for Yates for the U.S. Senate." And I vouch for Ogle - on his assurance - Petrie is one of the best workers in the County. He says of you - "I have watched his course with the greatest Satisfaction. He has proven himself the man for the hour. In my heart, I say, Thank God for so good a Governor". He says Washburne, tried last fall
to buy him (Petrie) up - because he did Not Carry the Co. for Washburne. Petrie told him he wanted Nothing. Thus saying he was not for sale Or, He was not a Washburne Man. He tells me he is going to Chicago soon and will see Foswell and others there And Post them against (Johes?) Washburne's Men at that place. The People for Yates - And I think WE the people helping, will put Gov. Yates in the U.S.S. Please let me know if you have recd the socil List-- WE Are Now At work (illegible) for Feby 29th After this pt. I hope to get out Awhile -
With Highest regards, I remain
Governor. under much
