Illinois State Penitentiary.
J. M. Pitman & Co.
Joliet, June 9th 1864
Dear Governor,
I would have come to Springfield myself, But Capt Pitman is quite unwell and I am alone and cannot possibly leave. Now in relation to the Col of this new regiment, If Mr E. S. Joslyn is appointed Col it will be a direct insult to the loyal people of Kane County. It is a matter of record that he was dismissed the service in disgrace, And that he is a Copperhead of the worst form in a matter of public notoriety. I have no feeling nor wish for any particular person for the place But for Gods sake do not outrage all of your friends here by allowing such a thing to be done. When I returned home from Springfield Our people had heard that Joslyn was to be appointed, and I assured them that you had told me that it would not be done. this satisfied them. But now the excitement is very high. But having an abiding faith in you I cannot believe you will suffer it to be done
Truly Yours &
