Gov. Yates

Dr Sir

After calling upon you I saw Mr Hatch but could not find "Uncle Jesse". I therefore left Springfield without revisiting yourself, and am so far on my way home.

Mr. Hatch refused to assist but not very positively. He may be persuaded to do it yet. I, therefore, send the subscription to O. H. Miner Esqr, who will call upon the State Officers and Mr Johnston of the firm of Messrs Johnston & Wright will submit the matter to the Springfield U. S. A. If I receive aid within a week the paper will continue. Otherwise it will stop. I cannot afford to lose more than my time and three or four hundred dollars. That I have done and cannot stand any further loss. If the party can afford to dispense with the aid of the Loyalist with its thousand circulation they can so decree and I will retire from the arduous and thankless contest.

Should the Union friends so decree let them make up a purse and forward to Salem by next Fridays Express addressed to myself. It will be duly acknowledged and thankfully received by one who is struggling to maintain the advantageous positions he has gained for the Union cause

Yours Truly George Brewster
