Belvidire July 11. 1864
Dear Governor
I have no answer to my letters, and altho' you may think I am intruding on your affairs I inform you that there is strong speculation upon the Mutual destruction of yourself & Washburne. In this Event you my particular friend [Miller?] is interested & is laying his pipes now to take advantage of this probable issue. It does not do a man any good to have his special friend speculating on his defeat.
I am Entirely willing
that you should be Elected as a sort of State man notwithstanding the nomination belongs to the North & am content for your sake & your services that it be done. I am averse to any Southern man but yourself filling the vacancy.
You are of course well advised of the movements If you are not you ought to be. But unless you are frankly & fully informed it is bad faith in matter to make the movements he is making.
They are of course quick but are being made chiefly thro' Lansing & the probable case or date from Winnebago
Yours
S A Hurlbut
