Gov. Gates: Sir: Having
been requested to enter the service of the Union as "Speaker" in the opening campaign, I desire you, please, furnish me any documents that will "post" me in the affairs of the Nation, past, present and prospective, which will culminate in the campaign just opening.
I submit to your judgement the selec-
tion of documents, Stating however that I have not been a "Politician" and need historic and statistic posting. Preaching the Gospel has been my business, but feeling that I can not better serve my country, and in compliance with Your own request. ("Help us all you can") ex pressed in a former letter to me, direc- ted Monmouth Norrea Co. I feel like
doing _all I can for my Government. I, all the while, have tried so to do in the Pulpit, and have not strong opposition from personal friends: but " none of these things move me neither count I my life dear unto myself." so been my country is saved.
Congratulating you upon your past
success in the labors of Office. I have high hopes for your fu- ture, and remain Sir,
Your Most Obedient Servant, R. White Box 336 Decatur Ill.
